Tricia Faulkner joined the staff of The Voice, the teen section of The State Journal-Register in Springfield, Ill., when she was 14 years old and a high school freshman. She was interested in writing when she applied for the staff, but not in newspapers.
As soon as Faulkner started working for The Voice, however, she started reading both the teen section and the rest of the newspaper. Before long, she turned into a news and political junkie. “That’s when I started having my daily ‘NewYorkTimes.com’ binges. When I started reading more, I became more interested in politics,” says Faulkner, now 18, a 2007 graduate of Springfield High School who is majoring in journalism and Middle Eastern studies at Northwestern University.
